3 hospitalized after a fiery accident on I-69 in Steuben County; quoted trucker
STEUBEN COUNTY, Indiana (WANE) – A violent 3-vehicle crash on Interstate 69 in Steuben County sent three drivers to hospital on Friday afternoon.
Police and medics were called around 5:30 p.m. on the northbound lanes of Interstate 69, about 2 miles south of the US 20 interchange, following a report of an accident involving several vehicles. There, a semi-trailer, pickup truck and SUV all collided.
According to a report from the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, a white 2017 Kenworth bobtail tractor driven by 29-year-old Nai Ye Koko, of Troy, New York, was heading north on I-69 behind a white 2010 Ford Econoline van driven by 46 year old. -Old Nathan Hadfield of Coldwater, MI, when northbound traffic started to slow due to heavy traffic ahead of an upcoming lane restriction.
As traffic slowed, the semi-rear pickup, which “caught fire” on impact, the report said.
The pickup was then pushed into a 2003 Ford Expedition driven by John Neal, 61, of Wilmington, Ohio.
The three drivers were taken to a local hospital for treatment, but none were seriously injured.
Koko was cited for following too closely and issued a written warning for dangerous speed. Police said the road surface was wet.
