CARDINAL POWER

Hoisington softball dominates Nickerson

HUTCHINSON — Hoisington/Central Plains showed all three phases — hitting, throwing and defending — to continue a 15-1 softball run through the Central Kansas League.

The Cardinals (17-1, 15-1 CKL) outscored Nickerson 16-1, 20-0 to secure the No. 1 seed in the Hays softball region. The Cardinals will face Smoky Valley on Thursday at home.

CARDINALS 16, PANTHERS 1 (G1) – Hoisington’s Kashlin Beck showcased the Cardinals’ speed and power with a pair of homers inside the park in 95-degree heat. Beck hit a 3-run homer and a 2-run homer and drove home six runs. Addyson Ogle and Mollie Steiner each brought home two points. Kadence Urban, Kassidy Nixon, Jordyn Boxberger and Ava Henry each started a race.

Pitcher Kassidy Nixon (10-0) struck out four batters in four scoreless innings. Nickerson’s Tenley Kaufmann doubled home Kalyse Abernathy after a fifth-inning brace against reliever Emma Willesden.

CARDINALS 20, PANTHERS 0 (G2) – Hoisington’s Ava Henry took center stage in the nightcap with two doubles and five home runs. Nixon backed her up with a triple and four home runs. Boxberger and Shaylah Kempke each completed two sets. Gracie Aylward, Urban, Mollie Steiner and Beck each ran.

The Cardinals scored 10 runs in the second inning and nine runs in the fourth inning.

Pitcher Boxberger (7-1) struck out four batters and gave up singles to Nickerson’s Abernathy, Lanaya Hada and Kaitlyn Daines.
