Comment: Is sustainable fuel a chance for the “dirty” flight industry to decarbonize?

SINGAPORE: The world is slowly finding its feet after two years of global lockdowns and restrictions. This was evident at the recent Singapore Airshow 2022, which I physically attended after two years of virtual meetings with colleagues, partners and potential customers.

Face-to-face interactions cannot be compared to those on video screens, so the mood was naturally joyful.

As the aviation industry recovers from the pandemic, the airshow had a strong focus on sustainability. Singapore, as a host country, has also taken steps towards sustainable air transport.

He announced the start of a year-long pilot program, which will see the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) supplied by Neste in cooperation with ExxonMobil in all Singapore Airlines and Scoot flights from the end of July. This year.

As air transport begins to grow again, why is it necessary to examine the impact of air transport on the climate and what is the most immediate solution to address it?

THE IMPACT OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON THE AEROSPACE INDUSTRY

Aviation accounts for 2-3% of all carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions globally, but when it comes to non-CO2 climate effects, like the heat-trapping vapor trails that planes leave in their wake, the total climate impact of aviation could be three times higher.

With scientists warning that the Earth’s temperature could reach a dangerous threshold as early as 2027, action is needed now.
