Hyundai Tucson 2022
Hyundai Tucson 2022 starting price: $ 24,950 | Price yours Where View listings near you
Above average: Long factory warranty; three-year free scheduled maintenance; hybrid and plug-in hybrid models.
Below average: No volume or adjustment buttons for the audio system; style may not be for everyone; Awkward push button shifter.
Consensus: Beneath its rugged tin, the 2022 Hyundai Tucson has a roomy cabin and offers plenty of premium features. Hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants add to the appeal of the Tucson.
Jeep Compass 2022
Jeep Compass 2022 starting price: $ 24,995 | Price yours Where View listings near you
Above average: All-terrain capability; spacious rear seat; active safety features standard on all versions.
Below average: One choice of engine; just average fuel economy.
Consensus: The Jeep Compass looks like a Jeep, and this crossover also has Jeep-like capabilities when the pavement ends. The only engine offer leaves us indifferent, however.
Tucson vs Compass: Urban sophistication meets the rugged outdoorsman
The Hyundai Tucson is freshly redesigned for 2022 and is bigger, has a new eye-catching styling and features new technology. The Tucson is powered by a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder developing 187 horsepower mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and is available with front or all-wheel drive.
New to the lineup is the Tucson Hybrid with 226 horsepower and standard all-wheel drive. There is also a Tucson Plug-In Hybrid. The combined EPA fuel economy for the base engine is 29 mpg (FWD) and 26 mpg (AWD), with the hybrid at 37 to 38 mpg. The PHEV, meanwhile, has an estimated output of 261 horsepower and offers 32 miles of electric range.
A new savage style adorns a larger body than before and is based on a longer wheelbase. The space for passengers is generous and the cargo space has also increased. The interior is full of available technologies. An 8-inch touchscreen is standard, while a 10.25-inch unit with navigation sits in the top trims, though its lack of volume and adjustment buttons can be off-putting. A digital dashboard is also available.
The Tucson is available in SE, SEL, SEL Convenience, N Line, SEL Premium and Limited trim levels. The hybrid versions are Blue, SEL Convenience and Limited. Top trims have a robust roster of tech features like Adaptive Cruise Control, Wireless Charging, Heated Front and Rear Seats, Heated Steering Wheel, Panoramic View Monitor, Hyundai Blind Spot View Monitor, remote parking assistance and the Hyundai digital key.
The 2022 Jeep Compass goes where most small crossovers fear to walk. This is especially true of the Trailhawk version, which includes all-wheel drive with a low range ratio, hill descent control, high suspension and skid plates. Other Compass versions come standard with front-wheel drive and offer all-wheel drive as an option.
All Compass models are powered by a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine with a 6-speed (FWD) or 9-speed (AWD) automatic transmission. Its 177 horsepower is adequate but hardly more, and fuel consumption averages 25 mpg with either transmission. Driving on the road can be steep, although handling isn’t bad.
Inside, a new center console offers more storage space and the finishes receive a necessary upgrade. Passenger space is good, as is luggage space with 27 cubic feet behind the rear seats and almost 60 cubic feet with the seatbacks folded down. An 8.4-inch touchscreen is now standard and includes Apple CarPlay / Android Auto Wireless; a 10.1-inch screen sits in the top three trims.
List of standard active driving aids now includes Forward Collision Warning with Pedestrian Detection and Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Keeping Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring and Cross Traffic Alert back. Adaptive cruise control, automated parking and panoramic camera arrive with the Latitude. Additional features available include a digital instrument cluster, automated parking, and wireless charging.
Starting price; standard engine power; infotainment systems.
