Family says cargo bike will open up a bigger world for Lucas
A GoFundMe page was set up to secure a cargo bike for an eight-year-old child from Lakepoint with autism and ADHD.
The people of Lakepoint will know Lucas as a happy boy, always smiling and loving wheelie bins and tuck them away on the street when empty. It’s his obsession and he does it every day. Lucas also loves animals, especially the beloved Labrador, Chelsea.
The life of Lucas and his family is cut short because of his condition. He is active, constantly on the run. They can’t go on a picnic, sit in a cafe or in the park, go to the movies with the family, in fact nothing where Lucas is supposed to sit. However, they can take walks or bike tours.
They used a special stroller but Lucas is too old for a stroller and too tall for a bicycle saddle. He cannot ride a bike or a scooter himself and even if he could it would be dangerous as he has poor concentration and more than likely if he was riding a bike he would be looking for wheelie bins!
In addition, he is unaware of cars and must be supervised at all times when he is outside.
The answer is a cargo bike.
Lucas’s parents, Jana and Marek, have found one that suits him, but it is over budget. “I have never, never asked for help before and know some cargo bikes are cheaper, but we tried the cheapest and unfortunately it was not suitable.
“A lot of people would say it’s a luxury to have a bike like this. I know it is, but this bike will help us as a family. We can do longer rides with Lucas. and he can sit comfortably and most importantly, safely, looking for wheelie bins, “said Jana, his mother. She said their budget was € 2,000 and the bike was € 5,850. .
“We cannot express enough how grateful we would be to anyone who could help support our fundraising,” she said. Jana and Marek moved to Ireland from Trencin, a town in Slovakia, Marek in 2004 and Jana in 2008.
“They met in 2007 while Marek was visiting family in Slovakia and“ immediately fell in love. ”Their daughter, Kiara, 11, and Lucas were both born in Ireland.
They love living here and although they miss their family they have made many friends here over the years and now they feel like a part of this country.
Lucas was diagnosed with ASD at the age of two and a half and since then has progressed steadily with the help of speech therapy, social skills therapy, occupational therapy, ABA therapy, horseback riding and swimming. Last year he was diagnosed with ADHD.
Says Jana: “Through years of working with Special Programs for Parents of Children with ASD, we have learned to work and manage Lucas. “
He attends Presentation High School where, Jana says, there is a nice school-aged team and they are always helpful if there is a problem. “All of the staff are amazing,” Jana said.
“This year Lucas has a new teacher, Mr. Darragh, and he has a specialist assistant, Ruth, with whom he has a wonderful relationship.
“She’s the best ANS!” She would visit Lucas during the summer vacation and come to see him on his horse rides. We are very grateful to him for all his help. Even during the holidays, Lucas continued with the summer school and since there was no bus service, Ruth picked him up every morning by car and drove him home. Ruth is just great, and so are all the staff including her former teacher, Mrs. Kelly, and the principal, Declan Fry. I’m so grateful that we have all of these people to help us and Lucas. “
