Federal money on the way to expand freight operations at PHL
United States Representative Mary Gay Scanlon said the new federal funding will help bring more cargo to the airport, which will mean more workers needed to unload it and transport it to their final destination.
“The bipartisan infrastructure act is all about jobs, and I’m happy to report that with increased funding, the Philadelphia International Airport will be able to grow the regional economy and create thousands of new jobs. “said Scanlon. “Philadelphia International has long been an economic engine for our region, and I am excited about the growth opportunities that the Infrastructure Act will open. “
The economic impact of the expansion could amount to $ 870 million per year and the creation of 6,000 permanent jobs and 5,000 construction jobs, Scanlon said.
“It is extremely important to create jobs where we can, and we understand that freight is something that we are going to see more and more,” said State Senator Tim Carney of Delaware County, whose district includes the airport.
He added that state officials will also do their utmost to advance ambitions to expand cargo operations at PHL.
The federal infrastructure law is also expected to send $ 763,000 to the Northeast Philadelphia Airport.
