New Rochester Driving School Aims To Meet Trucker Demand
ROCHESTER, Minn. – A new driving school in Rochester has struggled to meet the high demand for truck drivers.
160 Driving Academy opened its doors just a few months ago. It is located at 2450 Marion Rd. SE.
The seven-week program gives students the knowledge they need to earn their CDL license. Students gain experience in the classroom and on the road. Once they get their CDL they can go to any job they want.
And when it comes to the trucking and bus industry, they want these students.
At present, the school has six students, they could enroll more, but there is also a shortage of driving instructors.
160 Driving Academy branch manager Alex Hammond said companies are looking for so many drivers that someone doesn’t even need to have a perfect driving record to qualify for a CDL.
He said the most skilled drivers are almost guaranteed to have a job.
“We see a lot of our students who haven’t even fully completed our program or don’t yet have their CDL receiving between 8 and 10 different job postings,” Hammond said. “There’s not really a shortage of jobs out there, and a lot of concerns from students when they arrive are what will be available to me when I graduate, and overall what doesn’t. is not a question of what is available, it is what you want to choose. “
He said many of their students are from the Somali population, so they provide a prayer room for those in need.
There are scholarships and financial plans for those who sign up.
