Redwood City police arrest man in connection with fatal hit and run
REDWOOD CITY – Authorities arrested a 69-year-old man on Monday afternoon in connection with a fatal hit-and-run in Redwood City.
The crash was reported at around 2:25 a.m. Monday in the 1600 block of El Camino Real, the Redwood City Police Department said in a statement. Officers arrived to find a male victim with serious injuries.
He was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity was denied pending confirmation and notification from his next of kin.
Officers used security footage from a nearby business to identify a suspicious vehicle and driver, police said. At approximately 2:45 p.m., officers spotted the vehicle, identified as a 2019 white Ford van, moving north on the 300 block of El Camino Real in San Carlos.
Officers stopped the van, which police said had damage to the front, indicating it had been in a collision.
The driver, identified as Carl Hofstetter, “confessed to his involvement in the collision,” police said. He was arrested and incarcerated in the San Mateo County Jail on charges of hit-and-run and car manslaughter.
