Size, specifications and dimensions of the Rivian R1T in detail
Rivian has shared more details on the R1T’s cargo space as deliveries get closer. Every cargo space and nook seems designed to fit the different adventures of an R1T owner.
What is Frunk?
As with any typical battery electric vehicle, the first cargo area to look at would be the frunk. The R1T’s frunk has a total volume of 11 cubic feet and includes LED lighting, a 12V outlet, a cargo net for small items and a safety release. According to Rivian’s description, the trunk of the R1T can hold half a dozen full-size grocery bags or two full-size coolers. The frunk closes and opens automatically with the Rivian app, the key ring, the on-board controls or the exterior button under the lighter.
Dive into the gear tunnel
One of the most unique cargo spaces on the R1T would be its 65-inch gear tunnel. The Gear Tunnel includes LED lighting, a 12 V socket, a 110 V socket and a safety trigger. It can be opened and closed via the Rivian app, on-board controls or a button on the bed rail.
Rivian noted that the sealed gear tunnel would be equivalent to a changing room, where owners could place snowboards or sandy beach covers. Every part of the gear tunnel appears to have a purpose, including its door, which people can sit on or walk on to access the roof of the truck. Each door also functions as a cargo space as they have hidden compartments to hide smaller items like leashes or even tennis balls.
Place objects on the R1T bed
The size of the Rivian R1T is somewhere between a mid-size truck and a full-size pickup truck. With the tailgate up, the R1T’s body is 54 ” long, with a 45.5 ” overhang beyond the rear tires. The bed can extend up to 83.6 ”with the tailgate down, thanks to its gooseneck hinge system. The R1T tailgate can be opened automatically via the app, key fob, on-board controls or the button on the bed rail.
The R1T bed is designed for larger, bulkier equipment or items like mountain bikes or sheets of plywood. Rivian noted that the space between the wheel arches in the R1T’s bed is over 50 inches, and a long rolling panel eliminates the space when the tailgate is lowered. Thus, the R1T bed is a continuous flat surface from front to back.
The bed also features LED lighting, two 15-amp 110V outlets, and an air compressor with 150psi max pressure for tires or inflatable items. Rivian paid special attention to the R1T bed and placed forged steel ties at each corner and four additional ties above the bed rails. There is also more storage space under the bed, large enough to accommodate a full-size spare tire.
To top it off with the R1T bed, Rivian designed two lockable cargo cover options. Electric tonneau cover retracts using the app, on-board controls or a button on the bed rail. While the manual cover is made up of four lightweight panels which can easily be removed and stored inside the gear tunnel.
